Though I can’t say I like all of his work, there are a few of Ryan McGinley’s photographs that are undeniably lovely. I’m particularly attracted to his images that begin to talk about the body’s relationship to nature, the ones that move away from the more ‘traditional’ approach to art-nudity and are, arguably, honest records of human exploration.

Take a moment to read this essay by Martha Schwendener from McGinley’s newest book Sun and Health (via Tim Barber’s Tiny Vices). For me, this discussion of “freedom” in art-historical terms or simply as a concept is also particularly interesting to entertain.
