Portrait Week

Mr. Alec Soth (can we just elect him King of Photo Blogs?) oficially declairs it to be ‘Portrait Week’. In honor of this declaration, I thought I’d pick out one that I love — Harry Callahan’s beautiful portrait of his wife, Eleanor, in Chicago.

Last weekend I ran into this image and a few other Callahans in the photo collection at MoMA. I was really pleased to see it there. And what made it even better was that it was hung just to the right of a gorgeous Emmett Gowin (Edith, Chincoteague, Virginia, 1967).

One Response to “Portrait Week”

[...] I was slow to pick up the cue, but now that Jen and Shane have both picked up on Alec Soth’s declaration of Portrait Week, I’m compelled to do the same. I guess we don’t really think og Eggleston as a portrait photographer or even a photographer of people (though his new book, 5 x 7, is primiarly portraits) but this image has long been one of my favorite portraits. Titled “Memphis,” it is one of the most memorable photographs from Eggleston’s Guide, at least to me. I’ve never seen it in person. I should make a point of doing that. [...]
