The Surface of Things: Andreas Gefeller, Gordon Matta-Clark, Aneta Grzeszykowska and Jan Smaga

I saw the work of German photographer Andreas Gefeller recently, images from his series Supervisions. I couldn’t help but pair the apartment building interiors with Gordon Matta-Clark‘s house splitting projects — must be an influence here? Apparently Gefeller has created some type of harness system (which he straps himself into) so that he can meticulously study and document the spaces from above. Make sure to look at Gefeller’s other photographs from the series, as some of them are pretty astonishing.

As another potential parallel, I feel the need to also share the work of Aneta Grzeszykowska and Jan Smaga from their series Plan.

All rather interesting ways of looking at and deconstructing how we live. There are plenty more in this vein — anyone have photographers in mind to add to the list?

It’s really funny, I was just looking and thinking about Matta-Clark’s work the other day and now it appears somewhere… Check out these two photographers:

Ben Stern works in the same method, except he focuses on locations of childhood memories. His website is: http://www.benjaminstern.com/

    &

Georges Rousse (Who works more like Matta-Clark…)

Ben’s “Work Shop” image is really nice. And I haven’t seen Rousse’s work since the Contacts DVD’s. Great stuff, Jeremias, thanks!

I am trying locate an artist/architect/designer whose work I really admired, but have not been able to find on the web. His work involved actions in the interiors of old houses. an example would be: he’d tear everything off an old wall, any new additions, wallpaper etc, down to the original plaster, revealing a beautifully patinated surface. All of the detritus from the removal would be piled on the floor in a neat mound as part of a deconstructive installation. I think his name was Richard, Robert, or Thomas Ireland, but can find no web reference. Ring any bells with anyone?
