Erik Schubert, a recent graduate from the MFA photography program at MassArt, just put his portfolio online. So far, the website includes three seperate projects: Same as It Ever Was, How the West Was Won and the work from his thesis show (which, by the way, was one of the better student displays I’ve seen recently — or ever), How to Win Friends & Influence People.
The quote from his statement really sets the stage for the images:
“After graduating from college, he started selling correspondence courses to the ranchers among the sand hills of western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming. In spite of all his boundless energy and enthusiasm, he couldn’t make the grade. He became so discouraged that he went to his hotel room in Alliance, Nebraska, in the middle of the day, threw himself across the bed, and wept in despair. He longed to go back to college, he longed to retreat from the harsh battle of life; but he couldn’t. So he resolved to go to Omaha and get another job.”
– Lowell Thomas, “A shortcut to Disction [a short biography of Dale Carnegie],” found in How to Win Friends and Influence People

hi, shane! i am totally drooling over your pretty photo website. your pictures make me miss vermont an awful lot (check out those awesome essex winter grey-browns!). i’m graduating this may (holyshit) so i hope i can swing up north for a long-needed dose of vermont medicine this summer.
just thought i would say hi, and congrats on all of your work. have you talked to liz dowd anytime recently? she is trying to make a website for herself too. my senior show is may 5th and i’m kind of freaking out, but simultaneously having a really good last-month-of-college-ever. how is your year wrapping up?
do you remember first thinking about going to art school in Mrs. Bradshaw’s class? it feels like forever ago.
anyway, hope all is well!
high fives,
emily
