John Szarkowski: Now

It seems that John Szarkowski has a long-lasting and loving relationship with trees. One of my favorite tree photographs is an earlier one of his titled Young Pine in Birches, 1954.

I spent a little while today looking at Szarkowski’s more recent images of trees, photographs from Now, his 2006 exhibition at Pace/Macgill.

I’m very fond of the simplicity and honesty in his approach.

I don’t have a schedule. I jut take my camera outside. Some days I go to the pond and some days I don’t. Some days I look at the apple trees, and some days I find other things. I love it even more now, because these are my trees.

If you’re in New York, you might like to know that until August 24th Pace/Macgill will have an exhibition up called Hot + Bothered (Looking at the Landscape / Thinking About the World), which highlights two more of Szarkowski’s late tree photographs.

    Hey Shane,

I enjoy your blog. Anyhow speaking of trees and photographers I saw a great exhibition at Frankel gallery here in SF that had some really great shots by Robert Adams. I am not always the biggest fan of his, but the selection at frankel was really broad and really beautiful and all about trunk, limb and leaf.

Also I recently saw some amazing pictures of trees by Friedlander, I think they were sycamores. Lovely.

I know this is an old entry but I must say I absolutly loved John Szarkowski quote. Also just thought I would say thanks for introducing and contining to of many of talented photographers that come across on your site. It is highly inspiring to come across to see the depth in and behind peoples work and get a feel for how much more their is to it. I will defently be watching your journal progress even further along with your own photography.
