Panel Discussion: Is Photography Really Art?
Monday, November 26, 2007
There will be a panel discussion tomorrow that those of you in and around L.A. should definitely check out (despite the title). Charlotte Cotton, curator and head of LACMA’s Photography Department (and author of The Photograph as Contemporary Art), and artists Arthur Ou, Michael Queenland, and Mark Wyse will weigh in on the question, “is photography really art?”
The increased interaction between photographic practices and other media, as well as the pervasive presence of photography in today’s art market, brings renewed attention to this debate. The conversation will investigate why photography’s status as art remains up for review and will propose new possibilities for photography in contemporary art.
Tuesday, November 27

The panel discussion is happening in conjunction with the November 27th launch of the project Words Without Pictures. Check back in with the website tomorrow when it goes online – from what I hear, it should be promising.

I know, seriously. I think the discussion would/could still be interesting, though.
John, yes it is. Charlotte Cotton is now the head of the photo department there.

My question was rhetorical. If you go to this event, ask who came up with the title and topic and then throw an overripe avocado in their face.

I just went to a panel discussion here in Philly that had the title “How photography became Arts little darling of the 20th century…” IT WAS A DISCUSSION ABOUT WOMEN IN PHOTOGRAPHY! How terrible of a title is that.
