More Without Pictures

While I’m at it, I’ll mention a few websites that I’ve been meaning to write about (there will be no photographs in this post and, for the most part, the sites will not feature them).

UbuWeb
I hate to start with this first because I think it might just steal the show. UbuWeb has everything from amazing film and video and conceptual writing to 365 days of cool and strange and often obscure audio selections. Simply one of the best online archives I’ve ever encountered. I’ve spent hours upon hours reading/watching things on this website and don’t plan on stopping any time soon.

Image [&] Narrative
“Image [&] Narrative is peer-reviewed e-journal on visual narratology in the broadest sense of the term. Beside tackling theoretical issues, it is a platform for reviews of real life examples.” Check out the issue Thinking Pictures

Unphotographable
As Michael David Murphy (aka 2point8) confesses, these are “occasions when I wished I’d taken the picture, or not forgotten the camera, or had been brave enough to click the shutter.” I love this; “a text account of pictures missed.”

TED
“Inspired talks by the world’s greatest thinkers and doers.” If you aren’t familiar, familiarize yourself.

The MIT Press
Thank you, thank you, thank you for great publications and podcasts. See October.

This American Life
“Each episode has a theme. That’s mostly because a theme makes it seem like there’s a reason to sit and listen to a story…” This is public radio at it’s finest… next to NPR of course. After listening to the featured episodes, visit the archives.

The Highlights
“The Highlights is an artist-run site consisting of essays and reviews of art exhibitions. The site was founded by Ethan Greenbaum, Luke Stettner, and Sky Brickley. Every month, the three founders each invite one guest writer to contribute an article. The goal is to provide a forum for artists to voice their opinions in a public space.”

Public Library of American Public Library Deaccession
An archive of withdrawn library material from around the United States. Awesome.

FFFFOUND!
Alright, I’ve lied. This site’s all about pictures or, as they like to call it, “image bookmarking.”

Does anyone have any suggestions of other things (without pictures) to look at?
