Phil Fisk and Signature Lighting

Saturday, February 2, 2008

While looking through Phil Fisk’s portfolio I noticed a few portraits where he seems to have (though, maybe not intentionally) emulated signature styles of lighting by other photographers. Here are a few observations.

Philip-Lorca diCorcia:

Rineke Dijkstra (meets a Katy Grannan pose):

Gregory Crewdson:

This is not a negative comment on the part of his work – on the contrary, I think he has some remarkable portraits in his portfolio. Though it’s not on his site, this is by far my favorite – again, very diCorcia:

If you are going to go as far as pointing this out, point out how Crewdson and PL, are influenced by that one painter, you know the name..(think really hard) And that everyone is really influenced by everyone. I would not as go as far as saying he emulated. He may have contently ripped these people off (in regards to style). Almost all ad photographer and fashion photographers have to start somewhere. Did you think of Hopper? I knew it.

I do not like the work. I think that it’s too derogatory and does not say anything. anyone can be good at lighting, composition etc. Those are things you can learn. But work that looks nice can also be bad if the “photographer” has nothing to say.

    Nicola,

Most (if not all) of these are editorial shots.
