I think that it's too derogatory and does not say anything. anyone can be good at lighting, composition etc. Those are things you can learn. I would not as go as far as saying he emulated. He may have contently ripped these people off (in regards to style). Almost all ad photographer and fashion photographers have to start somewhere. Did you think of Hopper? I knew it.
