Sigur Rós and Ryan McGinley
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
I have to thank Ofer for passing on the news that Sigur Rós – a long time favorite band of mine – has just released a track titled “Gobbledigook” off of their forthcoming album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (English: With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly).
Along with the release of the song, the band has unveiled a music video directed by Arni & Kinski, “inspired by and in collaboration with Ryan McGinley.” McGinley, as you may have noticed, is also responsible for the album art; the cover (above) is an image from his latest series, I Know Where the Summer Goes.
Having listened to it for so long, it’s interesting for me to see Sigur Rós’ music paired with McGinley’s “vision.” Personally, I think the two work quite well together.
Download the .mp3 and watch the music video at high quality here.

Is that the Animal Collective or Sigur Ros? Seems like white middle-class post-teen self-indulgent angst has become global. Love the new album though, it has a great sound.

The drumming in the new song is reminiscent of Animal Collective/Panda Bear, yes, but it’s still Sigur Rós. If you haven’t listened to their other (older) music, it’s very different. Here’s a good song to start with:

Thanks for the video link, it was worth seeing again. I loved Heima. Your right, it is a very different album for Sigur Ros… I have to remind myself that it is healthy and good for my favorite artists to change/evolve.
I just stumbled across your site from a link via Renaldi. I liked the name of your collection Who Knows Where The Time Goes. Cat Power’s version of the song is good, though for me Nina Simone’s live version on her anthology collection is absolutely amazing.
Keep up the good work Shane!

In response to Jeff’s first comment… While I too am guilty of condemning McGinley’s work as angsty and faddish, I can’t help but enjoy this video (a lot, actually). I see nothing wrong with the youthful exuberance portrayed in it. Self-indulgent, perhaps, but causing no one any harm. I prefer to see young people partake in irreverent happiness than to act “responsibly” and participate in society.
Once they’ve had their fun, these kids will grow up to actively challenge the “middle-class” model that didn’t accommodate them. What’s more virtuous than to act as a patron for this natural happiness?
(But, yes, sadly… everybody’s white, white, white, white, white.)
